Minecraft | How does the mending work?

Want to know the bass on how to fix your minecraft tools? Our Minecraft How does the mending work? the guide covers the basics of what is arguably one of the most valuable in the game incantations.

First, here's a basic primer on the mending spell. Normally, players will collect XP and earn levels; these levels can later be used to enchant items such as tools, armor, and books. The Repair spell changes that mechanic, redirecting the XP you earn for repairing tools and armor. Applied appropriately, you could theoretically have tools and armor that never break!

Unfortunately, you cannot generate an enchanted book from Mending with the Enchantress Table. Instead, you're only able to get it in three ways:

  • By purchasing it from a resident of the librarians
  • Finding it while fishing
  • Do it in a treasure chest

Finding a librarian who sells mending is the most reliable way to make sure you get more copies of the darning book, so that's what you want to go for!

Minecraft | How does the mending work? | The mechanics

This piece of our guide on how Minecraft mending works will focus on the actual mechanics of the spell. According to the Minecraft wiki, Mending will repair 2 durability for every point of XP you earn. To put this into context, Coal Ore will give you 0–2 XP, which means it will repair your tool for 0–4 points. Statistically speaking, mining a pile of coal ore with an enchanted pickaxe from the remedy means your tool has a longer life after you finish mining the vein.

Some tools work really well with mending. Fishing, for example, costs 1 duration but you can give yourself 1-6 experience points, which means it will fix your fishing rod for 2-12 duration. Simply put, a fishing rod equipped with mending will never break and will rarely (if ever) need to be repaired or maintained.

An important note: mending is mutually exclusive with Infinity. You can have infinite arrows or a bow that can be repaired; you won't be able to use both without using cheats.

As cool as Mending can be, you won't always be able to get XP using tools or armor. Shovels, for example, are rarely used to gain XP. That's why you have to get it in other ways, such as by killing mobs, trading or using furnaces, and making sure the tool you want to repair is hand held.

A final note on repairs: if you have multiple tools or armor equipped, Mending will repair a valid random item. If all of your Mending enchanted gear is at full health, you'll get XP as normal.
