How to beat Candice in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Brilliant Pearl

The Snowpoint Gym in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl definitely ups the ante in terms of puzzles and battle difficulty. For example, Gym Leader Candice will have more Pokémon than seen in previous gyms. As you will likely be frustrated with the time it takes to get the gym badge, just a few simple tactics should speed up this process.

How to solve the Snowpoint City gym puzzle

When you enter the gym, you will see huge snowballs scattered around the area. While it's not outright said, your goal will be to smash the snowballs in the center to create a path forward to Candice. The quickest way to do this is to circle the outer corners of the gym and adhere to the snow grids parallel to the horizontal lines of the snowballs.

When you are on the snow covered panel, scroll through a row of snowballs and continue this method two more times to finish the remaining rows. It is possible to avoid all of Candice's gym members while doing this, as each rotates their body every 15 seconds.

Once each row has been destroyed, slide over the front wall of the gym and return to the entrance. From there, you should have an open, direct shot at Candice.

Which Pokémon does Candice use?

Candice is sure to provide an intense fight, with her having four Pokémon in her group and not all of them are Ice-type. These Pokémon are Snover (Lv. 38), Sneasel (Lv. 38), Medicham (Lv. 40), and Abomasnow (Lv. 42) in order of appearance. Fortunately, most of these have the same weaknesses as the Pokémon of the previous gym leader, Byron. This means that the Fighting, Fire, Rock, or Steel Pokémon should still be on your team for this fight.

The most problematic Pokémon of the group is Medicham, which is Fighting and Psychic. If your Pokémon share similar or lower levels, it is likely that moves like Medicham's Brick Break and Ice Punch will finish them off with a single critical hit.

The best Pokémon to use against Candice in the Snowpoint Gym

To find a dominant Fire Pokémon up to this point, you'll need to enter the Grand Underground from Pastoria City. One of the underground shelters you will see is the volcanic cave, which has multiple Magby running around and willing to fight. If caught at level 28 or higher, Trainers will see that the Pokémon has learned Fire Punch, Fire Wheel, and Brazier, all of which are super effective against Candice's Ice Pokémon.

Perhaps the perfect choice to take on almost any Pokémon in this gym is tired. Commonly found in Mt. Coronet, the Fighting type obviously has a number of attacks such as Vital Throw which prove their worth in Snowpoint City. Better yet, Machoke is allowed to learn Fire Blast and Flamethrower, making him the perfect replacement for those without Chimchar.

Since Medicham isn't troubled by Fire-type and Fighting-type moves, you'll actually need your own Ice Pokémon to make effective attacks against it. South of Snowpoint Lake, players should find a cluster of types of ice in the wild near Acuity Lakefront. The most common of them is Snover and it should be at a mid-30s level when it is found. When battling Candice, be sure to use Snover's Chill Wind and Shard of Ice skills to assist with super effective hits.
