How to get (and spend) PokéCoins in Pokémon GO

How to get (and spend) PokéCoins in Pokémon GO

Catching them isn't always easy Pokémon GO, and PokéCoins can help. PokéCoins are the in-game currency used to purchase consumables and cosmetic items to wear in the Shop. There are two ways to get Pokémon Go PokéCoins: Defend a gym or buy them for real money.

Many of the items available in the Shop are available through PokéStops. We recommend purchasing items from the Shop if you don't have access to PokéStops or if you need more than one particular item.

    Earn PokéCoins by defending Gyms

To get PokéCoins without paying for them, you need to have one of your Pokémon defend a gym. You can place Pokémon to protect a Gym by defeating all Pokémon on the control team. Each gym has slots for six defending Pokémon, and only one for each Pokémon can defend it, so you might want to make sure you have a good assortment of potential defenders to choose from. You can only have one of your Pokémon in a specific Gym at a time.

Receive 1 PokéCoin every 10 minutes defended by your Pokémon, up to a maximum of 50 PokéCoins per day. Your Pokémon must spend at least 10 minutes in a gym before they can receive PokéCoins. You can place Pokémon in up to 20 Gyms per day, but you won't be able to earn more than the daily maximum PokéCoins for defense. You will receive PokéCoins when your Pokémon returns to you, either with exhausted motivation or with another trainer beating them in the gym.

While defending, your Pokémon must not participate in battles. Get PokéCoins by having your Pokémon defend on the roster. Challengers fight Pokémon in the order they enter the gym. The longer your Pokémon is defending, the more likely it is to lose motivation to support the gym, returning to you, rewarding you with the PokéCoins you have earned. Trainers can increase the motivation of their team's defending Pokémon by feeding them berries.

With this method, you can earn a total of 350 PokéCoins per week. Right now, defending is the only way to get PokéCoins in the game without spending any money.

If a Pokémon returns to you before your daily PokéCoin limit, you can place another (or the same) Pokémon in that Gym (or a different Gym) to continue earning more PokéCoins.

Your Pokémon can only earn up to 50 PokéCoins during its time in the gym. So if you have a PokEmon staying there for three days in a row, it will return you with 50 PokéCoins, not 150. Also, if you have three other Pokémon returning the same day after their tours, you will still only earn 50 PokéCoins in total.

    Purchase PokeCoin using real money

You can choose to purchase PokéCoins using real money. The more PokéCoins you buy at the same time, the lower the price per coin. We have included the amount of "extra" coins you will receive when purchasing the larger packs, plus a $ 0,01 = 1 PokéCoin exchange rate.

Complete list of items that can be purchased with PokéCoins

You can get many of the items available in the Shop by turning the PokéStops. There are some things you won't be able to get your hands on without spending the currency, like Star Pieces.

The Shop also features boxes that include exclusive items that can only be obtained through the purchase of those boxes. There are no randomized loot boxes in Pokémon GO — you are able to see what you will get in each box. Some Store items receive discounts during special events, but those discounts are relatively few and far between. It's worth noting that the only way to increase backpack space and Pokémon storage capacity is to spend PokéCoins.
